My bed was on the floor, and I sat on it continuously refreshing my Opay bank app, hoping I would see the alert she promised me. Today was day two, and my stomach had even gotten tired of rumbling; I had only a cup of garri left in the house and no sugar.

It’s a night I can never forget. While others were celebrating, I had nothing. I was hungry, and it felt like I was going to die.
